Local Performers Join a Global Remembrance
By CHRIS PASLES, TIMES STAFF WRITER
Grieving in private over acts of terrorism was not enough for three Southland artists, who chose to reach out to their communities in acts of remembrance.
Conductor Rachael Worby decided to participate in a worldwide event. The artistic director of Avaz International Dance Theatre, Jamal, made a dance available to all comers in six cities. Composer Sharon Farber sent an unsolicited new work to the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the ensemble's conductor, Grant Gershon, was so taken byit that he added it to the opening program of his season.
Worby had been looking for something to do to commemorate Sept. 11. "I'd been pursuing ideas that involved music and people and community," she said, "but had not really embraced one notion that I thought would be powerful enough."
That's when she discovered an idea that got its start in Seattle: a "rolling" global performance of Mozart's Requiem.
"The entire world wrapped in the arms of Mozart's Requiem-I couldn't imagine not being a part of such an extraordinary tribute," she said. "Musicians all over the world have been hungering to be able to touch people with what they do best, which is quiet the soul
and heal the spirit."...

"It's important to bring people together and to have a sense of community on that day," said Jo Anne Wasserman, music director of the Santa Barbara Choral Society and conductor of the Sept. 11 concert. "We feel so powerless in so many ways (in the wake of tragedies). This is a way we can do something positive. I feel music is quite healing. It reaches people in a way words cannot."

Rolling Requiem is designed to remember all those who died in the attacks and to pay tribute to rescue workers... "I want to pay my respects to the victims through song," Koichiro Okazaki, chairman of the Nishinomiya City Choral League said.

Review: Standing-room-only crowd at Omaha portion of Requiem
BY ASHLEY HASSEBROEK, WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
Mozart's Requiem resonated at approximately 7:45 p.m. in Time Zone 6 (CDT) on
Sept. 11.
The Omaha Chamber Singers and the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra joined
forces to perform the moving work to an audience of more than 1,300 at St.
Cecilia Cathedral, as part of the international Rolling Requiem project.
More than 180 choirs, yielding about 17,000 singers, were scheduled to
perform the work in more than 26 countries across the globe Wednesday, as an
international memorial to victims of the terrorist attacks.
Performances began at 8:46 a.m. (the time the first attack on the World Trade
Center occurred) in Auckland, New Zealand, and continued through 20 time
zones across the globe. Because choirs from so many time zones participated
in the project, the piece was being sung somewhere around the world for 24
hours straight.
Other Central Daylight Time performances of the work were held in Chicago,
Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fairfield, Iowa. The
performance at St. Cecilia was the only Nebraska performance of the Requiem.
Mozart was originally commissioned to create the piece in 1791 by Count Franz
von Walsegg-Stuppach, a wealthy nobleman who owned property near Vienna.
During the composition process, the composer died, and the work was
eventually finished by Mozart's student, Franz Sussmayr.
The Requiem communicates everything Mozart must have been feeling as he was
literally staring death in the face: fear, contrition, regret and
desperation. But it also expresses hope, faith, praise and submission to God.
These sentiments, when combined with Mozart's stimulating music, make for a
fitting tribute.
Conductor David Batter led the two Omaha ensembles in a performance that was
not just emotional for the standing-room-only crowd but also stirring from a
musical perspective.
The dedicated performers captured the hopelessness in the Introitus at the
start of the piece, the intensity of the Rex Tremendae and the haunting
purity of the familiar Lacrimosa.
The four soloists - soprano Jamie Reimer, alto Erin Grych, tenor Jonathan
Dyrland and bass Jeff Keele - were all comfortable with their parts and
provided a flowing blend, especially during the Recordare.
The performers grew in musical confidence as the Requiem continued; by the
Communion, the choir and orchestra seemed an inseparable pair, bearing a
conviction that was non-negotiable: "Let eternal light shine on them, Lord."
