Philharmonic Choir of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra
St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church on Craigmiller Avenue in St. John's, Newfoundland. The church doors opened at 8:30 a.m. Newfoundland Daylight Time and the event concluded shortly after nine. The Philharmonic Choir of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra along with other local singers and musicians performed portions of Mozart's Requiem.
The Philharmonic Choir of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra participated
in the Rolling Requiem, by performing at St. Mary's Anglican Church in St.
John's, Newfoundland, Canada on 8:46 AM Newfoundland Daylight Time (NDT),
which is 1/2 hour ahead of Atlantic Daylight Time.
"Several communities in our province (Newfoundland), including St. John's,
provided a safe haven for thousands of travellers when their planes were
diverted while on transatlantic flights on Sept. 11 of last year. It
therefore seemed extremely appropriate for our community to participate in
the Rolling Requiem, especially since Newfoundland, being the most easterly
province in Canada, has it's own official time zone."
Our concert was lovely this morning. Just as we started singing 'et lux
perpetua' the sun shone through the window in an otherwise cloudy day here
in St. John's. I thought, it's right, what we are doing is right - 'and let
perpetual light shine upon them'.
I am honoured to be a part of this effort to reflect and remember those
lives lost on 9/11. I also remember those who spend several days here in
Newfoundland on grounded planes on route to the USA. - Heather Healey
